A startup wants to build a massive nuclear-powered data center on public land in Utah
The proposal would combine 456 small reactors with fuel production and waste storage to supply a massive AI computing complex.
- Valar Atomics is proposing "Project Beehive," a massive data center complex on over 9,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management land near Price, Utah, that would utilize 456 small reactors to generate around 9.6 gigawatts of power.
- Supported by President Trump's executive orders designed to accelerate nuclear development, Valar CEO Isaiah Taylor plans to mass-produce 25-megawatt reactors installed in series to reduce costs and allow phased construction.
- On July 1, Taylor powered an Nvidia microchip using the Ward 250 test reactor, telling the crowd, "Valar Atomics just became the first startup in history to make nuclear electricity right here."
- The Bureau of Land Management is reviewing the application and promises public input, though Lexi Tuddenham of the Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah warns the project's scale "completely transcends political lines."
- Nonnuclear construction could begin later this year, with first reactors online in 2028 and full completion by 2032. Tuddenham warned the project would have "tremendous implications for how public lands are used.
