Amazon Leo Is on Track to Launch Its Satellite Internet Service in 2026

Amazon says its space-internet service is weeks from launch after production sped up to 27 satellites a week, with 396 satellites now in orbit.

  • Amazon has manufactured its 1,000th broadband satellite for Project Kuiper, with service expected to launch within weeks as the company produces 27 satellites per week at its Kirkland, Washington facility.
  • Rajeev Badyal, who leads Project Kuiper, oversees a first-generation constellation requiring 3,232 satellites, built from a 170,000 square foot plant Amazon converted in 15 months using consumer electronics testing methods.
  • Although Amazon has 396 satellites currently in orbit, the company lost spectrum priority in July after missing an FCC deadline to deploy 1,616 units, affecting Ka and Ku bands.
  • The FCC will restore spectrum priority if Amazon proves it has built the hardware and secured launch manifests, with the company planning Vulcan and Arianespace flights this year.
  • Amazon has already filed for a second-generation satellite constellation in design phase, while Vodafone and Vodacom have been beta testing the service across Europe and Africa since April.
