Former NYPD Sergeant Pleads Guilty to Impersonating an ICE Agent to Threaten Woman and Her Family with Deportation in ‘Revenge’ Scheme
Atickul Islam admitted using ICE threats to target a Queens woman after she rejected his advances, prosecutors said.
On Wednesday, former NYPD sergeant Atickul Islam pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court to impersonating a federal immigration official, admitting he used deportation threats to intimidate a woman who had rejected his romantic advances.
During the March 29, 2025, incident, Islam sent threatening texts from his personal phone, then posed as "James W. Anderson," the ICE New York Field Office director, demanding the family report to an immigration center or face legal consequences.
As part of his plea agreement, Islam resigned from the NYPD on September 25 and is prohibited from possessing firearms; he is also barred from holding any future law enforcement position.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella condemned the conduct, stating his office will not tolerate officers using federal authority to "take revenge," while the FBI recently issued bulletins warning that criminals are impersonating ICE officials with increasing frequency.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 24, 2027, where the court will determine the final penalty; the felony charge carries a statutory maximum of three years in prison, though federal guidelines estimate zero to six months.
