Hunter Charged with Shooting and Killing a Donkey on a South Carolina Farm
The hunter told investigators he fired at a deer and missed, and officers charged him with negligent firearm use and hunting too close to a residence.
On Sunday, a hunter was charged in Anderson County after a stray bullet killed a pet donkey on neighboring property, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources .
The first day of firearm season for deer hunting saw the hunter fire at a target and miss, striking the animal on Hasty's Haven Farm instead.
Owner Joann Kelly described the victim, a donkey named Angelique, as a former therapy animal. "If you are going to mistake a donkey that looks like that for a deer, you probably should not have a gun," Kelly said.
Following an investigation assisted by the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, authorities charged the hunter with negligent use of a firearm and hunting within 300 yards of a residence.
Officials strongly reminded community members that hunters must positively identify targets. "This unfortunate incident serves as an important safety reminder," SCDNR said.
