988 Crisis Line Restores LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Support
The specialized option returns after more than 1.5 million uses since 2022, giving LGBTQ+ youth trained counselors during mental health crises.
On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline restored the Press 3 option, reconnecting LGBTQ+ youth to specialized crisis support after more than 14 months of unavailability.
The Trump administration terminated the program in July 2025, claiming specialized services had exhausted congressionally allocated funding and leaving young people without dedicated support for over a year.
Congress mandated restoration through fiscal year 2026 funding legislation, directing the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to allocate $33.1 million for the specialized services.
Senator Tammy Baldwin and The Trevor Project confirmed the resumption; however, The Trevor Project remains excluded from the restored federal program despite piloting the original 2022 service.
The 988 LGBTQ+ Youth Access Act remains a legislative priority for advocates, who aim to codify these protections into federal law to prevent future administrations from removing this lifesaving resource.
