Mike Ditka, legendary Chicago Bears player and Super Bowl winning coach, dies
The Hall of Fame coach and former tight end was the first to win NFL titles as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
Hall of Famer Mike Ditka died Friday at 86, his family announced, just days before the Chicago Bears face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
Fans are urging Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson to wear Ditka's iconic sweater on Sunday to honor the legendary coach who led the 1985 Bears to a Super Bowl championship during his 11-year tenure.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Ditka "epitomized football over so many years," while the Chicago Bears stated his impact "is immeasurable" as player, coach, and ambassador.
Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur noted "sometimes in life things happen that are more important than football," acknowledging the loss before Sunday's 214th rivalry game.
Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell recalled meeting Ditka at the NFL Combine, calling it "one of the best times of my life, and most intimidating times of my life," reflecting his enduring influence.
