‘Whalefall’ Rotten Tomatoes Reviews Praise Massive Whale Tale
- On Friday, October 16, 2026, survival thriller Whalefall arrives in theaters, directed by Brian Duffield. The film follows Jay Gardiner, who becomes trapped inside an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale with one hour of oxygen remaining.
- Jay Gardiner embarks on the dangerous dive to recover the body of his father, Mitt Gardiner, who died by suicide one year prior. Flashbacks reveal their strained relationship and Mitt's emotionally abusive demeanor toward his son.
- Trapped inside the whale after a struggle with a giant squid, Jay faces a race against time with only one hour of oxygen remaining. Practical effects simulate the claustrophobic environment as Jay navigates the creature's digestive system.
- Reviews describe Whalefall as a "tense, grief-soaked survival thriller" anchored by performances from Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin. Critics note the heavy father-son drama sometimes overshadows the survival premise, creating what some call "a carcass of a thriller."
- The title refers to a whale carcass sinking to the ocean floor, creating a "rich marine ecosystem." Though marketed as a survival story similar to The Martian, the film pivots into "whale spirituality" in its final act, which critics found bizarrely sentimental.
