Raytheon's Upgraded Drone Killer Passes Three Tests in Just 15 Months
The new interceptor has completed three live test launches and is aimed at faster one-way attack drones, Raytheon said.
- RTX subsidiary Raytheon unveiled the Coyote Block 2C+RM counter-drone interceptor on Monday ahead of the Association of the United States Army conference.
- The company-funded effort, developed over 15 months, aims to equip the military with faster responses to evolving Group 3 drone threats, including jet-powered systems like the Shahed 238.
- Replacing the existing turbojet propulsion with a solid-rocket motor enables faster successive shots, while the upgrade features a new seeker and warhead to "defeat all classes of current and emerging drone threats," according to Raytheon.
- Thomas Laliberty, President of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, said the system remains in development with additional tests scheduled through the first half of next year as the firm works with the Department of War.
- The Army previously outlined plans to purchase at least 6,000 Block 2-series interceptors between fiscal years 2025 and 2029, reflecting growing demand for counter-drone systems to address complex threats in the Middle East and Ukraine.
