Ex-UK army chef jailed for nearly four years over homemade gun, explosives
He admitted explosives and firearms offences after police found gunpowder, a crude homemade cannon and other weapons, prosecutors said.
On Wednesday, Sheffield Crown Court sentenced British Army chef Mark Broadhurst to 46 months in prison after Justice Hilliard ruled his offences were connected to terrorism.
Police arrested Broadhurst at Catterick Garrison in September 2024, and a raid on his Chesterfield home in Derbyshire uncovered gunpowder and a homemade cannon described as "crude" by an expert.
The court heard Broadhurst wanted to be "in history books and criminal records" for killing police officers; he maintained contact with a Telegram group whose members were jailed last year for 29 years.
Defending, Jim Littlehales presented a reference describing Broadhurst as "excellent at mentoring junior members of the catering team" and argued the firearm was never used to threaten anyone.
Although Broadhurst denied terrorist intent, the judge determined he sought to impress other right-wing extremists; Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley stated the sentence reflects the "danger he posed to the public.
Mark Broadhurst expressed racist views, a desire to form a paramilitary organization, and an intention to manufacture improvised firearms and sell them to far-right organizations.
