Pentagon OKs Second Destroyer for Maine’s Bath Iron Works
The decision follows a Pentagon review that found the shipyard has the capacity and stability to support construction, officials said.
- On Monday, the Department of War announced that Bath Iron Works in Maine is cleared to build a second Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer this fiscal year, pending Congressional funding approval.
- The administration's original $65.8 billion budget request envisioned only one destroyer, prompting concern from Maine lawmakers that production lines at BIW could struggle despite having 11 ships already on contract.
- A Pentagon review determined BIW made "significant operational and managerial improvements," confirming the yard has the capacity and stability to support a second destroyer, Deputy Secretary of War Steve Feinberg said.
- Sen. Susan Collins, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, welcomed the certification, noting she had advocated for the second ship to support the yard's roughly 6,800 employees and keep the Navy strong.
- The Pentagon stated this decision is part of an "aggressive campaign" to revitalize the maritime industrial base and "outmatch global pacing threats" like China as the Navy seeks to bolster fleet capacity.
