Poll: 43 percent support ‘Medicare for all’
Support is strongest among Democrats and independents as rising healthcare costs and distrust of leaders shape views on government-run coverage.
On Tuesday, the Axios-Ipsos American Health Index showed 43% of Americans support government-run health insurance, while 24% oppose it and 32% remain unsure. Support nearly doubles opposition as healthcare costs mount.
A separate KFF survey released last week found 66% of Americans favor Medicare for All, the highest support in a decade. This surge follows Medicaid cuts and expired Affordable Care Act premium tax credits threatening millions of enrollees.
Support remains divided along party lines, with 62% of Democrats and 47% of Independents backing the proposal, while 52% of Republicans oppose it. Top concerns: inferior care quality and high taxpayer costs .
Public trust in political leaders remains low, with only 20% trusting President Trump for health information and 25% trusting Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Additionally, 49% would avoid candidates accepting pharmaceutical company donations.
Researchers from Yale University found shifting to a Medicare for All-type system could save more than 114,000 lives and around $1 trillion annually. Ipsos senior vice president Mallory Newall said such programs "is a message that can connect with voters" next month.
