Pope Leo XIV’s Brother Also Diagnosed with Cancer Amid Pontiff’s Discovery
Deborah Prevost said Louis was diagnosed in 2017, treated again in 2019, and fell out of remission three months ago.
Pope Leo XIV's older brother, Louis Prevost, is undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, as sister-in-law Deborah Prevost revealed the diagnosis.
First diagnosed in 2017, Louis Prevost maintained the condition at a "very low level" through stem cell treatment and clinical trials, though he "fell out of remission" three months ago, Deborah Prevost said.
Despite their individual health battles, the brothers remain in contact; last week Louis spoke with Pope Leo XIV to inform family members, "He called to let us know what would be happening," Deborah Prevost said.
Family support remains strong as they navigate parallel health crises. "We keep praying, keeping spirits up for both of them," Deborah Prevost said, adding she had no updates on further treatment.
Cancer runs through the family lineage; their mother, Mildred, lived six years after diagnosis thanks to experimental treatment, a journey documented in the biography American Pope.
Louis Prevost, who lives in Florida, has a multiple myeloma, confirmed the woman to CBS, saying that she was first diagnosed in 2017 and was in remission until three months ago.
