The Not-so-Secret Vulnerability in Ukraine’s Drone Arsenal? Chinese Technology
Ukraine is expanding domestic production and alternative sourcing as Chinese parts still account for 28% of imported drone components, customs data show.
According to Ukraine Customs data, Ukraine has slashed direct reliance on Chinese drone parts from nearly 90% in early 2024 to just 28% in the first eight months of 2026.
Ukrainian drone manufacturers depend heavily on electronics from China, a key Russian ally, raising fears Beijing could restrict supplies or favor Russian defense companies seeking the same components.
To maintain supply chains despite export controls, manufacturers route purchases through intermediaries in third countries; Andrii Taganskyi of Odd Systems emphasized that certain thermal sensors are irreplaceable, stating "without this 5%, there is no camera."
Full transition to Western suppliers would inflate costs by roughly 60% and proportionally reduce output, making the shift economically unfeasible for most Ukrainian defense firms, according to Oleksandr Yakovenko of TAF Industries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Beijing's alignment tilts toward Russia, stating China's "greater willingness to help them rather than us" poses strategic risk even absent direct weapons transfers.
