Video Captures Humpback Whale Crashing Into Boat Off Long Island
The family recorded the collision as the whale ripped a door off the boat and tore a hole in the hull, nearly capsizing it.
On Saturday, October 10, 2026, a humpback whale collided with a fishing boat near Moriches Inlet, New York, tearing a hole in the hull and ripping a door from its hinges. Nobody sustained injuries.
Fisherman Steven Heid, his father-in-law Steve Bashian, and nephew Oliver Samter were fishing near a school of bunker fish when they spotted the whale. Knowing whales were feeding, the group shut off their boat's engine to drift safely.
"This whale is coming toward us," Heid said before the mammal erupted from the water and struck the vessel. Samter, a Roslyn High School senior, feared the boat might sink, later stating, "I thought we might be going down."
Rob DiGiovanni, executive director of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, praised the crew for "shutting down the vessel and avoiding active maneuvering." The whale swam away after the incident, and the boat remained operational.
Under New York's Whale Awareness Act, boaters must stay at least 300 feet from whales. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warns that whales can surface unexpectedly, advising vessels to maintain distance and a lookout.
A whale-jubarte surprised a group of fishermen by jumping from the water and hitting the boat where they were on the coast of New York, in the United States, according to the American broadcaster ABC News. The encounter took place in the vicinity of Moriches Inlet, Suffolk County, and was recorded on video.
