BBC pays white staff less in almost every pay band: The Telegraph
The corporation said its pay is fair and competitive as the median gap favored minority staff in almost every grade.
The BBC's 2025/26 pay-gap report reveals minority staff earned higher median pay than white staff in six of seven bands, with ethnic-minority employees earning 13.2% more at the lowest grade.
White employees hold a larger share of best-paid jobs, pulling the overall median ethnicity gap to 0.7% in white staff's favor, the BBC explained alongside its 50:20:14:25 diversity target.
Former Culture Secretary John Whittingdale argued the corporation should pay staff 'on the basis of the value and merit they contribute,' while disabled managers earned 7.5% more than non-disabled staff.
Critics extended scrutiny to 'colour-blind casting' policies, with historian Zareer Masani calling the approach 'absolutely crazy' for historical periods, while an independent review warned diversity could look 'clunky'.
With the BBC's royal charter expiring December 31, 2027, the corporation's funding and remit face significant scrutiny as leadership must justify diversity-linked schemes against calls for traditional meritocratic principles.
