Search for missing pup in Yellowstone is under pressure as winter nears
Rescuers say the 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier has been seen daily, but snow and the season closing could end the search next Monday.
- Rescuers are racing to locate Luna, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier lost since mid-September, before Yellowstone National Park closes for the season next Monday. Katie Boucher, president of Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center, is leading the recovery effort.
- The dog escaped from a Canyon Village Campground cabin on Sept. 10 after housekeeping staff accidentally opened the door while her California family visited Norris Geyser, causing Luna to flee into the wilderness.
- Despite freezing temperatures, Luna has survived over the past month by foraging, according to Boucher; Marie Jaskula, a local resident, warned visitors not to chase the dog, as it triggers her fight-or-flight response.
- The National Park Service and hospitality concessionaire Delaware North have provided support, allowing rescuers to access restricted areas where Boucher has set humane traps using the scent of the dog's family.
- Time is rapidly running out as winter weather and the Monday closure approach; Boucher remains hopeful, noting that sightings continue daily and Luna is in a stable location, though she emphasizes that time is running short.
