Mahmood Announces Inquiry Into Manchester Synagogue Attack Deaths
The inquiry will examine missed opportunities and sensitive security evidence after the attack killed two worshippers and injured three others, officials said.
On Monday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced a public inquiry into the deaths of Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby, killed during a terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue during Yom Kippur in October 2025.
Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old Syrian-born attacker, was on police bail at the time of the assault after arrests on February 13, 2025 for breaching a non-molestation order and September 21, 2025 on suspicion of rape.
Melvin Cravitz died from multiple stab wounds, while Adrian Daulby was killed by a police bullet as he barricaded the synagogue doors; three other people were seriously injured.
Mahmood stated the inquiry "will ensure that all evidence can be heard, including any sensitive national security material that could not otherwise be fully heard in the coroner's court."
Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson previously apologized after internal reviews confirmed officers seized Al-Shamie's devices but failed to examine them for evidence of extremist content before the attack.
